Reg was cranky when she got up in the morning. She knew she wasn’t actually any further along on the Marbleton case, and making any progress on it while she was still in Bald Eagle Falls was a long shot. She was only there for a few days. How was she going to solve a thirty-year-old mystery?

Marbleton’s ghost was no help, too vague and uncertain to give her any information. There was too much reading to do. She wasn’t from Bald Eagle Falls and didn’t know who to interview that would actually know anything about what had happened.

What did she think she was doing? She should just eat Christmas cookies and mind her own business.

She felt a little better once she’d had coffee. It had been a restless night, when she had been looking forward to a really good rest, which probably triggered her frustration.

Reg had entered Joshua Cox’s phone number into her phone contacts the last time she had been in Bald Eagle Falls and he had done some research for her on ownership of a corporation. She knew he was only a kid, but he was good at what he did and, if she wanted someone who could dig down into the information she already had and find the right people to talk to, then who better than an investigative journalist? And he’d published too, not just in his high school paper, but in the Bald Eagle Falls Weekly. Reg had looked up his work online, and it was good. The little she had read of it.

“Joshua Cox,” he answered his phone like a grown businessman.

“Joshua, you probably don’t remember me, but I’m Reg Rawlins, and earlier this year you—”

“Helped you with that truffle thing,” Joshua finished. “I guess everything must have turned out okay. You never called me back. I would have done a story on it, you know. Gotten you some good publicity.”

“I know, but some things… were out of my control. It really wasn’t my story to tell.”

“I looked for it online to see if someone else had reported on it. But nobody had.”

“No,” Reg agreed. “It was kept quiet.”

He sighed. “Well, what can I do for you today?”

“I think… maybe it is something you would like to be involved in. Maybe we can both get something out of this one.”

“Yeah?”

“Do you know the story behind the theater? The trouble they had getting it built, and Jacob Marbleton running off with the money that was raised…?”

“I don’t know much about it. I’ve heard of it, but not in much detail.”

“I have a box full of notebooks and press clippings on it.”

“You really think I could find out anything new now? Decades later?”

“Well, maybe not. If you’re not interested…”

“I didn’t say that. I just don’t know that there’s anything left to find out.”

“They never found the money.”

There was a pause while Joshua thought about this. “You think it’s still out there?”

“He said he didn’t transfer it out to other accounts. If that’s true, then he must have taken it out in cash or gold or something like that.
